Because of their high-functioning skills, a lot of children with autism struggle to fit in and become frustrated by their inability to do so. For the first time in the history of autism research, a large-scale study is exploring the use of repetitive behaviors and motor coordination training as a way to improve the daily lives of children and youth with autism. The goal is to help the typically developing children of these children, who are now entering adolescence, reach their potential. “The NoTREAT study, or No TROl Evolution of Autism Treatment, is the largest randomized controlled trial of its kind. We have a unique opportunity to learn if these interventions work, and whether they’re safe and well tolerated,” says Ian Brown, a professor in the departments of Psychiatry and Psychology at Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine. “This is a positive step to helping children and youth on the autism spectrum improve in areas that are important to them,” says Brown, who is also the principal investigator of the study. Although there are many ways to classify children with autism, one way is to classify them based on their social behaviors. Kids with autism with severe social impairment are known as high-functioning autism (HFA), while those with moderate to mild social impairment are classified as having Asperger’s. These two groups are most often diagnosed with autism, but they also show other developmental delays. “Over the past few decades, we’ve seen these two groups become more separate. In the past, the medical field and the education field were not differentiated
